My goodness, what fun. The story of a Mumbai slum kid, Jamal (Dev Patel), who manages to luck his way through an appearance on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Slumdog Millionaire moves along on a wave of energy and exuberance rarely seen on screen. As Jamal is presented with one impossible question after another, we cut to flashbacks that show us just how he managed to know each answer. Who invented the revolver? Well, it just so happens that Jamal’s crazy brother carried a Colt. As if all this weren’t entertaining enough, there’s also a wonderful love story here. This must-watch movie has won hearts and awards around the world (it swept the BAFTAs and Golden Globes), and should put in a strong showing at this year’s Oscars. -JJ
