Storms Rider: Clash of Evils

Director: Dante Lam
Voice Cast: Richie Ren, Nicholas Tse
Release Date: Oct 9

Directed by Dante Lam, Storm Rider tells the story of two great heroes, Wind (Richie Ren) and Cloud (Nicholas Tse), who well, where do we begin? They defeat their demented mentor in battle, then turn on each other, then become separated, then have adventures with hot-looking anime-style babes, then reunite, then team up against this other guy, then turn into demons, and then, and then, and then.

If you're not a fan of the comic book, you might struggle for the first 20 minutes or so trying to keep up with the action in this frenetic, fantastical animation from China. Which guy is Wind? The one with the brown hair or the grey hair? Why is everyone fighting? Where is everyone going? What in the hell is going on?! But if you manage to settle into a sort of zen state and just let the images wash over you, Storm Rider does eventually seem to make some sort of sense.

More than this, it is actually a surprisingly fluid and beautiful 2-D animation from a country that hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire in this particular field of endeavour. Open-minded fans of Japanese anime will probably find Storm Rider more than acceptable.

THE VERDICT
Surprisingly good.
